DEDICATION

Walking into a room cluttered with pictures,
newspapers, magazines and books is a unique
experience at Virginia High. Very few classrooms
are kept equipped with contemporary materials
and such an assortment of books as hers is.
Everything that is studied in textbooks is
supplemented by excerpts from material she has
painstakingly and dutifully saved. Each day is
brightened with her discussions, ideas, and
enthusiasm, but the fifty-five minutes allotted
never seem to be enough. As she once said in
class, "I have all these grandiose ideas, and then

the bell rings."

As much enthusiasm as she displays in the
classroom' one would think she would not have
enough energy left to attend outside activities
and meetings in the evenings. But she can be
found at many games and extracurricular
activities supporting our school as much as any

student.

She received an A.B. degree from Berea College
and continued her education at the University of
Virginia, the University of North Carolina, and
East Tennessee State University to complete the
requirements for her M.A. She presently is
chairman of the C.A. Belcher Scholarship
Committee, head of the English Department, and
a teacher of sophomore and senior English.

We dedicate the 1971 Virginian to this unique
person, Mrs. Doris Booth.

15

FREEDOM OF INVOLVEMENT
IN STUDENT LIFE

16

As individuals,
we have the freedom
to participate in activities
that hold a special attraction
for us.

Freedom to take advantage
of  the  opportunities  offered;
to experience the feeling of pride
to explore the vast regions
of our imaginations.

Freedom  to  work  together;
to become better acquainted
with our friends and neighbors,
the town in which we live.
Freedom  to  co-operate;
to do the best we can
with our abilities.

Freedom ... to become involved,
to become a special part of V.H.S.

BACCALAUREATE

Many hours spent practicing

at State Street Church

for Baccalaureate,

where to sit, which aisle to take,

who to follow.

And then, finally,

the awe and reverence

of baccalaureate service itself.

GRADUATION

The rustle of caps and gowns.
Listening to the guest speakers.
Hearing your name called
and going up to receive your
long awaited diploma.

Many shed tears of nervousness,
happiness, regret, anticipation,
and good-bye.

BASEBALL

The Virginia High Bearcats "uncrowned base-
ball champs of the Southwest District" amassed a
17-3 record for their best season ever. The
mighty 'Cats were number one in 8 out of 9 ca-
tagories in the Southwest District. Hard hitting
Danny Barker led in five departments. The four
highest batting averages in the district were held
by Virginia High Athletes. The powerful Bear-
cats couldn't participate in the playoffs because
of being saddled with a VHSL probation.

CHEERLEADERS

The 1970-1971 V.H.5. cheerleaders are un-
doubtedly the best yet to represent our school in
state competition. They won various awards, in-

Virginia Beach. This year's cheerleaders, with
fantastic school spirit and the ability to project it,
aroused and strengthened our school spirit . . .
They have truly given V.H.S. something to be

FOOTBALL

The Virginia High Bearcats suffered a disap-
pointing season as they went 2-8 for the season.
In the opening game Bearcats met the Trojan's of
Battle High and lost a hard fought contest. In the
second game of the season the Cats really
looked good but lost by only one point to highly
rated Graham. As the season developed the 'Cats
could not quite put it all together, as they emerge
defeated 80% of the games. Most games, howev-
er, were closer than the scores indicated. The
Bearcats defeated two good S.W. district teams.
The Abingdon game, 7-6, was a tough game
played in the mud. The talents of Butch Shelton
and Joe Perry put us on the scoreboard, as Shel-
ton broke loose for a touchdown and Perry made
the extra point. The Richlands game, 32-12, was
a well earned victory.

Virginia High's '70-'71 varsity basket-
ball team was an exciting and unpre-
dictable ball club. Early in the season,
forecasters predicted the Bearcats to finish
in the cellar of the SWD. But as the sea-
son progressed, Virginia High proved to
be a contender for the crown, eventually
finishing third in the district.

The Bearcats were blessed with plenty
of individual talent. Senior Bruce Meade
was a stand-out ballhandler and
shooter. James Pender, dubbed "Jumping
James" by area sportswriters, was a con-
sistent performer all season. Mike Foote,
a junior, provided the Bearcats with
plenty of rebounds. Other stand-outs
were Steve Smith, Raphael Cansler, Leon-
ard Bowers, and Harlon King.

The Virginia High School Distributive Education program functions within the
framework of the overall curriculum of the school. It is a program which is a
cooperative enterprise, using both the facilities of the school and the marketing
and merchandising resources of the community. Because most of the student
placements have been in retail establishments, the instructional program has been
developed to a great extent in this area. The program is concerned with the realm
of distribution and not entirely with the beginning positions in retailing which,
inevitably, are the initiating experiences for the majority of students seeking a ca-
reer in distribution.

FREEDOM OF ESTABLISHMENT

222

Freedom to have our accomplishments,
reached in the four years
we've attended V.H.S.,
cited and acknowledged.

To remember throughout the years
what organizations and activities
we participated in.

Freedom to patronize our town,

to make it "A good place to live."

Freedom to become

responsible citizens,

to make use of the facilities available.

Freedom to respect

the private property of others,

to keep our town clean

and respectable,

to uphold the law

and respect our country, our flag.

Freedom ... to take with us

the ideals and values we acquired

at V.H.S.

At this point
in the VIRGINIAN,
the story
of the school year
has been completed.

We have tried
to depict
in picture
the FREEDOM
each has had
within our school
and community.
These freedoms
will continue to be ours
only as we measure up
to our individual
responsibilities.
